Victory Over Adversity On Christmas Eve

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.  (Revelation 2:11)

If we have ears, let us hear what the Spirit is saying unto the churches.  The Spirit has no need to tell the world to be faithful.  The Spirit tells the world to reject the world and accept Christ.  But the Spirit tells the churches to hear, to be faithful, to overcome.  As you have heard before, to be an overcomer is to be saved from the second death.  To be an overcomer is to make sacrifice in this life.

In our word for today, John writes this second letter to the Church at Smyrna.  This church was being persecuted for their belief in Christ.  They were under heavy pressure and had nothing to look forward to but more pain, tribulation, suffering, and abuse.  But Christ tells John to write to them and to tell them to remain faithful.  To overcome by being faithful.  Don’t be afraid of those who can do damage to the body.  Don’t be afraid of those who can kill the body.  But fear him who has power to destroy the body and soul.  If we have ears, let us hear what the Spirit says to the churches.  We can overcome in the midst of adversity.  We can overcome in the midst of persecution.  We can overcome in the midst of trial and tribulation.  Rejoice and be exceeding glad when they shall revile you, and persecute you, shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for the sake of Christ.  Rejoice and be exceeding glad.  For you will have a great reward in heaven.  You reward is due because of your victory over adversity on this Christmas Eve and all throughout the year.
