Become Useful In God’s Service

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.  (Ephesians 4:28)

Are you useful in God’s service?  This passage says “Let him that stole steal no more…”   We can replace ”steal” and “stole” with many other actions and will be right on target.  If stealing was your sin, then it can be left where it is.  For we can steal in many different ways.  We can steal joy from our family.  We can steal peace in our Church.  And surely we can literally steal merchandise or property and use it for our own personal use.  If stealing was not your sin, you can replace it with lie, cheat, fornicate, use drugs, abuse alcohol, pride, selfishness, lusts, etc. etc. etc.  Whatever it may be, do it no more.  Once we put that life down, we can then become useful in God’s service.  I like the way this thief ends up in this verse.  He used to steal.  But now he works with his hands.  Not only does he cease from stealing but now he has enough to give to those who are in need.  He can now give to the poor.  He can now give to homeless.  He has become useful in God’s service and a light to a dying world.  Rather than taking, he now gives.
