Striving To Win The Eternal Crown Of Glory

24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.  25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.  26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:  27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.  (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

Atheletes practice for hours and hours daily that they may obtain the prize which is the championship.  Basketball.  Football.  Golf.  Boxing.  Tennis.  Track and Field.  Swimming.  All seeking to obtain a corruptible crown.  In Paul’s day, runners would receive a wreath.  In our time, they receive a trophy.  Wreaths will rot.  Trophys will rust and be forgotten.  These are temporary crowns.  But we, as athletes for Christ, train, run and fight for an eternal crown.  A crown of glory.  A crown of righteousness.  A crown of life.  To receive these crowns, you must train with diligence for preparation.  To receive these crowns, you must run with patience.  To receive these crowns, you must fight with purpose.   To receive these crowns, you must pray for power.  Power to keep you.  Power to strengthen you.  Power to sustain you.  Strive that you might receive the eternal crown.  During our race, we must keep our flesh under control and allow the Holy Spirit to rule.
