Develop Younger Women

4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. (Titus 2:4-5)

Younger women are to be taught to love their husbands. What a strange statement by Paul. Surely we should not have to teach young women to love their husbands. When they marry, they take their vows saying ’til death do us part”. To what might Paul be referring when he says teach them to love their husbands? Could it be that Paul is placing more emphasis on priorities rather than on actions? In other words, younger women should be taught that self control, love of husband and children should be very high on their list of priorities. In this text, it appears that Paul gives eight priorities for the younger women and young wives. First younger women are to be sober. This is to have self control and sound moral judgement. To be serious about their walk with the Lord. Some translations places this third with priority #2 and #3 ranking as priority #1 and #2. Second, the younger women are to be taught to love their husbands. Thirdly, they are to love their children. Love of husband and children is more than a feeling. It includes sacrifice. Fourth, they are to be discreet. To live quietly. Not a life of public partying and drinking. Teach her that she does not have a license to do whatsoever she pleases. She is to be wise in her decisions. Fifth they should be taught to be chaste. This is a life of purity and holiness. Paul is saying that they should be taught to be pure in their worship, in their moral behavior and in sexual matters. Sixth, the younger women should be taught to be keepers at home. It does not mean that the wife must be kept at home but rather she should be taught that she should not neglect her duties in the home. It does not matter how great a woman becomes outside the home, whenever she neglects the home, she neglects her husband and children. Seventh, they are to be taught to be good. Good natured. Good hearted. Good inside and out. Doing good and being good. Kind and caring. Finally they are to be taught to be obedient to their own husband. A better term to get the fuller meaning of this lesson is submissive. Wives are to be submissive to their husbands. Some women cannot be submissive even to God because they have not decided to be submissive inside the home. When a husband loves a wife as Christ loved the Church and gave his life for it, the wife should not mind being submissive to the husband. Titus has a responsibility to develop the younger women. The younger women has a responsibility to be developed into the younger women that God is seeking.
