Develop Older Men

1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. (Titus 2:1-2)

Paul tells Titus to speak to the Church sound doctrine. After talking to Titus about false teachings, he says “But You” speak sound doctrine. Develop the older and mature men to have self-control which means that they should control themselves. Develop them to be worthy of respect, to live wisely, to have strong faith and to be filled with love and patience. What a contrast this is to some of the older and mature men who fill the house of God in our age. Some do not have self-control. Some allow money to rule their lives. Some are not respected. Some allow lust to control them. As a man matures in age, he should also mature in Christ. A closer communion with God should grow as he grows up in age and closer to eternity. The final three characteristics are directed for the older men but should be pursued by all Christians who profess Jesus Christ. They are faith (in God alone), love (charity filled with God’s goodness and out of a pure heart) and patience (learning how to wait on the Lord while working in His vineyard). Titus has the responsibility to develop the older men. The older men has the responsibility to be developed into the kind of mature men that God is seeking.
