The Light Of The Body

34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. (Luke 11:34)

Light allows the eyes of the body to see.  If there is no light available, our eyes are not able to see anything.  When light enters our body through the eyes, we are able to see.  We can see where we are going.  We can see how to drive our vehicles.  We can see how to put on our clothes and make-up.  We can see how to go to work and do the job that we are paid to do.  We can see how to eat our breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We can see all of our loves ones.  We can see words on paper to be able to read.  But if light does not enter our eyes, we are in darkness.

The light of the body is the eye.  Without the eye, the body is in darkness.  Jesus says in Luke 11:34 that when the eye is single, the whole body is full of light.  There has been many debates over what the term single means in relation to the eye.  Some feel it could mean good, pure, generous, singleness of purpose, healthy, sound, clear or unclouded.  I gravitate to it being a good eye or a good purpose as well as being pure in your motives.  This is because directly following that statement, Jesus gave the opposite of single as being an eye that is evil.  An evil eye is one that will keep the body in darkness.  Keep in mind that the passage found in Luke 11:34 is also rendered in Matthew 6:22.  It was delivered by Christ as He spoke of laying up treasures for yourself on earth and trying to serve two masters, God and money.  Therefore, a single eye could in essence be one that has a clear view and a sound mind of what motivates them.  One that is not a double-minded man but stable and sound.  Stable to know that you should not have a love for money.  Sound to know that you cannot serve two masters.  Most importantly, we know that an evil eye is one that has selfish motives, one that is bent on doing wrong, one that in essence works for Satan, one that seeks to serve God and money, one that is disobedient to God’s word, one that has two masters, and finally one that is in total darkness.

If we want our body to have the light that is necessary for us to see our way, we must be single-minded, have purpose, have pure motives, be generous to the poor, be good in our judgements and be sound in our understanding.  This will give light to our entire being.

Praise God, Your Name Is Written In Heaven

18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.  19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.  20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:18-20)

Can you imagine having the power to lay hands on the sick and they be healed?  Can you imagine praying and laying hands on the eyes of a blind person and they receive their sight?  Can you imagine going into the house of someone who is possessed by demons and you command the demons to come out and they obey you?  I suppose this is somewhat similar to what the disciples had experienced.  Jesus told the disciples to heal the sick when they enter into a city.  (Luke 10-9)  He said he had given them power over serpents and over scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.  (Luke 10:19)  After the disciples went into the cities preaching the gospel and healing the sick, they returned with a great testimony.  They told Jesus that even the devils were obedient to them.  What a great testimony.

Can you imagine that kind of excitement today.  A pastor or preacher or any Christian having that kind of power would no doubt excite many people who crosses their path.  But Jesus says something mighty profound.  He says in essence, the real basis for joy is not in the power that he has given to you, but the real basis for joy is that you are saved from eternal damnation.  The real basis for joy is that you will not be condemned to hell.  The real basis for joy is that you have a right to the kingdom of heaven.  The real basis for joy is that you do not have to live in this old mean and evil world and then die and go to a place much worst.  The real basis for joy is that you have received the gift of life.  The real basis for joy is that you have been saved.  The real basis for joy is your salvation.  You have been saved by grace.  You have been bought with a price.  The real basis for joy is that your name has been written in heaven and in the Lamb’s book of life.  Praise God.

The Word Of God Is Good Seed

………The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. (Luke 8:11-12)

Any farmer knows that you cannot plant a mustard seed and expect quash to come up.  You cannot plant corn seeds and expect turnip greens to come up.  Whatever seed is planted will be the result at harvest time.  The Word of God is good seed.  If that Word is planted, you are guaranteed to receive a good harvest.  If there is one weapon that Satan uses against Christians so that we might doubt God and/or falter in our walk with Him, it is a denial of God’s Word.  He denies us God’s Word by using a number of methods.  He denies us by making us slothful in our daily reading of His word.  He denies us by having us feel that we can come to God’s house to hear the preached word inconsistently.  He denies us by making us think that all we need to do is feel good about the Word and not make it a part of our life.  He denies it by making us feel that Bible Study and Sunday Church School are things of the past.  Know This.  When reading is inconsistent, and when hearing is inconsistent, and when study is inconsistent, you can rest assured that living will also be inconsistent.   We need our daily dose of good seed.  We need our weekly dose of worship, Bible Study,  praise, encouragement and motivation.  Satan does not want us to have it because he knows that when that seed is planted and when that seed germinates, it will produce the kind of living that pleases God.  Satan wants to literally snatch the word away from those who might hear and believe and be saved.

Don’t allow Satan to snatch the Word from you.  If you are unsaved, he wants you to stay that way so that he might have some company in hell.  If you are saved, he wants to snatch the Word from you so that your life does not effect anyone around you.  He wants to snatch the Word so that you are unable to live as Christ wants you to live and that your living will only please yourself.  He wants to snatch the word from you so that you might think that it is all about you and what you can get.  The Word of God is good seed.  Plant it in your heart.  Make it a part of your life.  Don’t allow it to be taken away.  Believe the Word.  Desire the Word.  Cherish the Word.  Hide it in your heart.  It will produce a good harvest and a life pleasing to Christ.

The Word Of God Produces A Crop

But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. (Luke 8:15)

Good seed that falls on unhealthy ground does not produce a crop.  Good seed that falls on hard ground cannot produce a crop.  Bad seed that falls on good ground produces a crop, however, since the seed is bad, it produces a bad crop.  Good seed that falls on good ground produces a good crop.  The good seed is the Word of God.  The good ground is an open heart.  The crop is fruit from the seed.  What kind of fruit does the Word of God produce?  It produces love and joy.  It produces peace and longsuffering.  It produces gentleness and goodness.  It produces faith, meekness and temperance.  If there is no fruit, then there has been no crop produced.  If no crop has been produced, then the seed has not taken root.  An open heart cannot help but produce from the Word of God.  When you see your life change from your old self to a new you, you will know with a surety that the seed has taken root and is producing fruit that is fitting for the Kingdom of Heaven.

The songwriter says “I know I’ve Been Changed”.  I can say that with them because I too have been changed.  The change is when God molds us and shapes us into what He wants us to be, His image.  We are the clay and He is the potter.  Be patient.  Be diligent.  Be committed.  The Word of God mixed with patience will produce fruit in your life.

To Have Or Not To Have – Your Choice

Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. (Luke 8:18)

Our society is very obsessed with prosperity, getting riches and becoming more financially stable.  Getting more and wanting more.  It is not unexpected, especially in the difficult economic times.  In the word for today, Jesus is sharing how we can get more understanding from His Word.  Getting the truth from God’s Word can be a narrow path.  This verse carries a severe warning.  It is referring back to the seed or the Word of God and the hearers.  Very simply, Christ warns that we must hear and use what we hear if we want to be given things from God.  If we hear and do not use what we hear, then what we have shall be taken away.  Note we must take heed how we hear. We can hear but hear wrongly.  We can think and guess and suppose we know what we hear, but it can be false and counterfeit and shall be stripped away.  But we must ”take heed,” and discern what we hear.  We must make sure we have the truth.

We can get a greater understanding from the Word of God simply by hearing and accepting what God says.  It is irrelevant what man says if it is not from the Word of God.  We can say it and make it sound good.  We can say it and make it sound sweet.  But man lives by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.  Jesus says simply that if you receive God’s Word and accept it, you will receive a greater understanding.  However, if you receive it and put your own understanding to it, the little understanding that you seem to have will be taken away.   To have or not to have.  It is our choice.  Believe and receive more understanding.  Or reject and have that which you seem to have taken away.

The Overflow Of The Heart

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. (Luke 6:45)

The heart cannot lie.  If a man has a good heart, the things that he will do will not be evil but good.  Even if he desires to do bad, because of the love in his heart, he will do good.  He will forgive others.  He will seek to uplift others.  He will seek to do good to all men, especially those who are Christians like himself.  By the same token, an evil heart will find it very difficult to do good.  Why?  Simply because there is evil deep within.  Evil directing their actions.  Evil directing their motives.  Evil directing their thoughts.  Proverbs 12:20 says “Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil.”  If you want to know someone’s heart, just watch their actions.  It is not what comes out of their mouth.  For the mouth can lie.  But as you have heard over the years, “Actions speak louder than words”.  If you find someone that says, I love the Lord, but then he does not love his brother the Bible calls him a liar.  Be watchful of those who are always talking about others.  Be watchful of those who you see discouraging others.  Be watchful of those who are seeking to cause confusion.  Be watchful of those who are always negative.  Be watchful of those who are underhanded.  We are all known by the fruit we bear.  What is in the heart will proceed from the heart.  What proceeds from the heart will reach the heart of others.  What is in the heart will overflow into the life of a true believer.  Goodness.  Mercy.  Grace.  Truth.  Kindness.  Meekness.  Obedience.  Love.  Joy………………

A Child’s Wisdom

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. (Luke 2:40)

As Christ grew up as a child, he was filled with wisdom.  Young people today can be wise as they are growing up in the grace of God.  Youth is not an excuse to make unwise decisions.  One thing I notice about Christ is that he listened and was obedient to his parents.  Luke 2:51 says that Jesus was subject (obedient) to his parents.  Yes he may have been wiser than them.  Yes, he may have understood things better than them.  But he was still obedient to His parents.  That is true wisdom.  That will also lengthen your days on the earth.  (Ephesian 6:1-3)  In other words, if you want to live long, obey your parents.

The second thing I noticed about Christ is that he knew how to listen to his elders.  Luke 2:46 says that Christ was sitting in the midst of doctors and teachers asking them questions.  He was not a know-it-all.  But rather he asked questions and gave answers to them as well to show that he understood.  Wisdom is not knowing everything, but rather it is how we use what we do know.  Wisdom is knowing when and how to listen.  Wisdom is knowing when to be quiet.  Wisdom is knowing when to talk.  Gray hair does not necessarily equate to wisdom.  Wisdom is following the guidance of God.   If you want to be wise, ask God for wisdom.  It is He that gives wisdom to all.  (James 1:5)  As a child, you can grow up and make wise decisions.  As an adult, you can make wise decisions while grown up.  First be obedient to God.  Be obedient to your parents.  Be obedient to your elders.  Be obedient to your leaders.  God’s grace will be upon you.  Make Satan a liar in this new year.  Become wise as serpents, but harmless as doves.

The Way Of Peace

………………to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1:79b)

Luke tells of the prophecy of Zacharias after his mouth had been opened.  God shut up the mouth of Zacharias because he doubted the Word of God.  After Zacharias believed, his mouth was opened and he prophesized saying that his son, John the Baptist, shall be the prophet of the highest which is Jesus Christ.  Zacharias went on to say that John shall go before Christ and shall prepare the hearts of men to receive salvation.  His duty was to prepare men to receive forgiveness for the remission of sins.  He was to give light to them that sit in darkness.  He was not that light but he was to guide them to the light.  He was to guide them into the way of peace.  How can we have peace without Christ in our life.  It is not possible.  For Christ is the author of peace. 1 Corinthians 14:33.

Jesus Christ is called the Prince of Peace.  In this world there is tribulation.  In this world there is confusion.  In this world there is mistrust.  In this world there is anxiety.  There is no peace on the job.  There is no peace in the community.  There is no peace in the home.  But you can find peace in Christ.  The way of peace is only in Christ.  In the 14th Chapter of John, as Jesus was making preparation to leave this earth, he said ”Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you”.   John 14:27.  You can expect to have difficulties and trouble in this world.  You can expect to have hard times in this world.  You can expect to have trials and tribulations in this world.  Jesus tells us to be of good cheer because He has overcome the world.  He has overcome trials.  He has overcome difficulties.  He has overcome trouble.  He has overcome hard times.  He has overcome tribulations.  How can one have peace when confusion is all around?  It is only in Jesus Christ and knowing that he will never leave us or forsake us.  We can have the same peace Christ had when he stated “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.  To be guided into the way of peace is simply to be guided to Jesus Christ.  Look to the New Year with a renewed devotion, a renewed commitment, a renewed joy, a renewed vigor and the peace of God.

Will The Witness Please Take The Stand

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. (1 John 5:6-8)

Is Jesus the Christ?  Is Jesus the true Messiah?  Is Jesus really the Savior of the world and of mankind?  Is Jesus really the one sent to earth by God to give life to men?  Is Jesus really the Son of God?  Jesus was declared to be the Son of God at His baptism for God himself stated these words “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)  Similar words can be found in Mark 1:11 and Luke 3:22.  That is why the Bible states that this is He that came by water.  He was declared to be the Son of God at His water baptism.  He also came by water because He came from the womb of a woman.  He also came by blood for He died on the cross as was prophesized.  This is He that came by water and blood.   The Spirit bears witness.  God the Father bears witness.  The Word of God (which in fact is Jesus Christ himself) bears witness.  The Holy Ghost (which is the Spirit) bears witness.  The water bears witness at His baptism.  The blood that He shed for remission of sins bears witness.  Who are you going to believe?  Man or God?  Man or the Holy Spirit?  Man or the Word of God?  Man or the truth?  For if you have received a witness from man, know that this one thing is true.  The witness of God is greater than the witness of man.  Read 1 John 5:9.  Pass the word.  Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

God Is With Us In Truth And In Love

Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. (2 John 1:3)

It is a joy today to know that God is with us in truth and in love.  I thank God that He is with us in truth.  We have friends who are with us but at times, they are only with us for what they can get.  We have others who are with us but will disown us at the first sign of trouble.  Then there are those who are with us but are unable to help us through difficult times.  But God who is full of mercy is with us in truth.  Jesus Christ, who is full of grace, is with us in love.  Whatever I have to face today, I can face it with confidence that I am not walking alone.  With Jesus on my side, I can make it.  With Jesus on your side, you can make it.  Grace be with you and peace be unto you from God the Father.
